Event Speaker - Michael W. “Mac” McClendon

Chief, Office of Public Health Preparedness
Emergency Management Coordinator
Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services

Mr. Mac McClendon joined Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services (HCPHES) in November 2005 as the Emergency Management Coordinator. In August 2006 he was named Chief, Office of Public Health Preparedness where he is responsible for all hazard planning and response to public health emergencies. Mr. McClendon is also experienced in developing and implementing emergency preparedness plans within the all hazards framework and serves on many local and state planning committees.

Mr. McClendon was formerly the Emergency Response Chief for a major chemical manufacturer and has over 24 years experience in emergency response and management including Fire, Heavy Rescue, Hazardous Materials and EMS. He served as the Safety Officer for the Unified Command, Reliant Park Sheltering Operation, post Hurricane Katrina. Mr. McClendon is a member of the Texas Task Force One Urban Search and Rescue Team where he serves as a Task Force Safety Officer and is also a member of the State of Texas Region 2 Type 3 Incident Management Team. He is certified as a Fire Service 1 instructor, Pro Board Certified Instructor for Excavation and Confined Space Rescue Operations and is a FEMA instructor for Structural Collapse Rescue Operations and is also an adjunct instructor for the Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) Division.

Mr. McClendon has also responded to many local, state and federal disasters including the Texas A & M Bonfire collapse, multiple Texas flooding responses, Texas City BP Refinery Fire, Pasadena Phillips Chemical Plant Fire, Hurricane Dennis, the September 11, 2001 World Trade Center response and the HCPHES Hepatitis A mass vaccination response.
